Range of Wines and Cultivated Varieties

Domeniul Bogdan was born from a dream…the dream of producing an exceptional and totally natural wine.

The geographic area with the soil and the unique climate between the Danube and the Black Sea, the biodynamic viticulture method, the carefully selected varieties, which are Pinot Noir,
Feteasca Neagra, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc, Muscat Ottonel, Muscat Blanc, Riesling Italico and Rhein Riesling, are factors that determine the terroir of Domeniul Bogdan, with unique conditions for obtaining high quality wines.

We respect Nature in all its forms, therefore, our wines are produced from grapes cultivated according to the principles of biodynamic agriculture – the cultivation system with the most holistic approach, which enables the terroir to express itself by developing authentic flavors and by producing wines with character.

In our winery we combine traditional wine-growing methods with the latest wine-making technologies in order to achieve the grapes full potential.

The grape varieties, all cultivated biodynamically, are the following:

Pinot Noir is cultivated on 14.6 ha. This is an ancient variety and is cultivated in the whole world, especially in the cooler climates, but is historically associated with the Burgundy region in France. It is a very sensitive variety to the weather conditions, and for this reason, the flavors differ by vintage and location. However, the Pinot Noir wine is one of the most appreciated wines in the world. The color is translucent light red, medium body, low tannins, subtle flavors of cherry, raspberry, strawberry, vanilla, clove, tobacco, depending on the vintage and region.

Syrah or Shiraz is cultivated on 5.7 ha. This variety is associated with the northern part of the
Rhone Valley, as it seems to be born in France, according to the latest studies. The wine is usually high in tannins, with black forest fruit flavors, spices, tobacco, smoke.

Feteasca Neagră is cultivated on 27 ha. This is an ancient local variety, that has been
cultivated on the Romanian land for more than 2000 years. Its origin is in the Prut river valley. This variety has a great quality potential, so that in its best years it can overtake the French variety Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine is intense red with ruby shades, with black currant flavors that become richer and softer by aging.

Merlot is cultivated on 26.6 ha. It is one of the most popular and widespread grape variety in the world. Its name comes from the name of the blackbird, a bird that prefers these grape berries. The wine is usually delicate, soft, with fresh raspberry flavors.

Italian Riesling is cultivated on 24.2 ha. This variety is spread in most European countries, especially in the temperate-continental climate; it is considered as the second variety in terms of cultivated area in Romania. The wine can be dry, demi-dry or demi-sweet, usually with high acidity and peach flavors.

Muscat Ottonel is cultivated on 21.1 ha. Its origin is in France, it is one of the oldest grape variety cultivated in the world and is representative for the dessert wines. This variety is characterized by a very intense aromatic floral bouquet. The wine can be dry, demi-sweet or sweet with a fine and delicate taste. Remarkable is the fact that it is the only variety that transmits the whole aromatic bouquet to the wine.

Chardonnay is cultivated on 5.2 ha. Its origin is in France, but is successfully cultivated almost everywhere. It is a versatile variety in respect of flavor, because it doesn’t have a dominant flavor, and it gets flavors depending on the region and the winemaking technique. Chardonnay is appropriate for aging in oak barrels, the winemaking technology containing also a malolactic fermentation. The wine is usually dry, elegant and soft.

Sauvignon Blanc is cultivated on 16.4 ha. This variety is very popular in the Loire Valley and Bordeaux. It is one of the most widespread white wine grape variety in the world. The wine has a special taste because of its flavors of lime, green apple, passion fruit and white peach, according to the ripening stage of the grapes at the time the wine was made. Sauvignon Blanc is unique among the white wines because of its herbaceous flavors like bell pepper, jalapeno, gooseberry and grass. If aged in barrels for several years, it gets flavors of vanilla, coconut, nutmeg.

Cabernet Sauvignon is cultivated on 12.9 ha. This variety has its origin in the French region Gironde, being cultivated before the 16th century. Considered for a long time as an ancient variety, recent genetic studies have shown that the Cabernet Sauvignon variety is in fact a hybrid descendent of Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Franc. The wine obtained has a specific scent of black raisin, its taste value increasing after a minimum of 18 months of storage.


The sommelier profession is one of the oldest in the world, in fact it is more a vocation than a “profession”.
All the good sommeliers have a common thing: their love for wine. For serving the customers, the sommelier takes the drinks order, recommends the wines that associate with the chosen dishes and serves them according to the established rules.
